Helping You Find the Right Next Step for Someone You Love

Choosing a retirement residence for a parent or loved one is one of the most important decisions a family can make. It is not simply about finding somewhere safe. It is about finding a place where someone can continue to live with dignity, independence and a sense of belonging — while giving families confidence and peace of mind. At the British Retirement Home, we understand that this decision involves the whole family.

A Home Where People Are Known

One of the greatest differences at the British Retirement Home is our size.

Because we are a small, non-profit retirement residence, we can provide a more personal approach. Residents are known as individuals — their routines, preferences, interests and personalities are understood.

This creates the familiarity and trust that help people feel truly at home.

02

Independence with Reassurance

Many families worry about finding the right balance: “How can my parent remain independent while still having the support they may need?”

At the British Retirement Home, our approach is to support independence, not replace it.

Residents are encouraged to maintain their own routines, interests and choices, while knowing that help and professional support are available whenever needed.

03

Continuity of Care and Familiar Faces

Families often tell us that one of their greatest concerns is change — unfamiliar surroundings, unfamiliar people and a lack of personal connection.

At the British Retirement Home, we place great importance on continuity and relationships.

Our positive working environment helps us retain dedicated team members who get to know our residents personally. This means familiar faces, trusted relationships and support that is tailored to each individual.

04

A Community, Not Just Accommodation

Moving to the British Retirement Home is not simply about having somewhere to live. It is about becoming part of a welcoming community.

Residents enjoy shared meals, activities, conversations, outings and the opportunity to build new friendships with people from different backgrounds and nationalities.

Our aim is to create a place where residents continue to enjoy life, maintain interests and feel connected.

The questions families actually ask

Answered, honestly

Will my parent be safe?

Yes. Every apartment has an emergency call system, a nurse is present in the home, and a doctor is available on call. The British Retirement Home is fully licensed under Portuguese social care regulations and has been welcoming residents since 1988.

Will they be known personally?

Yes — that is the whole point. With just 18 apartments and suites, every resident is known by name. We learn what they like, who matters to them, what makes their day.

Will the staff stay, or constantly change?

We invest in our team, and many have been with us for many years. Low turnover means residents build genuine relationships with familiar faces, not a rotating roster.

Will they be lonely?

There's a real community here — shared meals, activities, a warm International circle — and family are always encouraged to visit. Residents take part as much or as little as they wish.

Is this a home, or an institution?

A home. Residents bring their own furniture and treasured belongings. There are gardens, a sitting room, real conversation. It feels like a small village — not a facility.

Always a real person

When you call the British Retirement Home from abroad, you reach someone who knows your loved one — never a faceless call centre.

FaceTime & video calls

Video calls with distant family are supported and encouraged, so weekends and birthdays stay close, no matter the distance.

Starting the conversation

There is no single “right moment”

Many families begin by simply visiting, asking questions and exploring the possibilities. We welcome families to come and experience the British Retirement Home, meet our team and discover whether our approach feels right for their loved one.
